GEO fundamentals
What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
By Akshay Zine, Founder of AuctorisAI · Updated
The short answer
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is an industry term for improving how a business and its content can be discovered, understood and represented in AI-generated answers. It combines useful content, accessible pages and consistent, supportable brand information. It is not a way to control what an AI system says.
What changes when search generates an answer?
A conventional search result often sends a reader to a list of pages. A generative experience may synthesize an answer and link to supporting material. That makes the clarity of individual facts, the context around them and the reliability of the underlying information worth reviewing—not just the wording of a headline.
For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says existing SEO practices remain relevant. A supporting page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet, and there are no additional technical requirements specific to these AI features. Other AI products have their own systems; Google’s guidance is not a universal specification. [1]
Start with facts your business can substantiate
Write a clear account of what you sell, whom you serve and where your expertise comes from. Keep your name, primary offering and contact information consistent across the pages you control. Support product, performance and customer claims with accessible evidence rather than broad assertions.
For example, a payroll provider could explain which regions it supports, how onboarding works and what a customer must prepare. A dated product guide is more useful to a buyer than a page that repeatedly calls the product “the best.” This is an illustrative content approach, not a measured ranking tactic.
- Choose a small set of real buying questions from sales and support conversations.
- Review whether an accessible page answers each question directly and accurately.
- Link to relevant documentation, attributable research or genuine case studies.
- Check that structured data describes the visible page rather than adding unsupported claims. [2]
Measure observations, not an invented authority score
Record the prompt, model or product, date, exact response and any supplied citations. Distinguish a name mention from a recommendation, and both from a verified source link. Keep competitor comparisons on the same prompt and exclude unavailable responses rather than counting them as zero.
A few API responses are a diagnostic sample, not a census of consumer AI products. Use the sample to identify questions for investigation, then measure business outcomes such as qualified enquiries separately. No change to a page guarantees inclusion, a citation or an accurate description.
What GEO should not become
Avoid fabricated statistics, purchased praise presented as independent evidence, or large numbers of near-identical pages. Google’s people-first guidance emphasizes original value, clear sourcing and content made to help an intended audience. [3] A useful GEO programme should improve what a person can learn about your business even if no AI platform cites it.
Common questions
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. Crawlable pages, useful information and sound site structure remain important. GEO describes an additional area of observation and content planning, not a replacement for those fundamentals.
Is special AI schema required?
Google does not require special schema for its AI features. Use relevant supported markup that matches visible content; it does not guarantee selection or citations. [1][2]
Can a provider guarantee a ChatGPT recommendation?
No credible audit can establish that a brand will always be recommended. Model outputs depend on the product, prompt, available information and other conditions outside a website owner’s control.
